GER and POL cruise into men's team foil semifinals

(Beijing, April 18) In the men's team foil quarterfinals of the "Good Luck Beijing" 2008 FIE World Championships, Poland scrambled a 45-43 win over France, while Germany thrashed the US 45-38 to make it to the last four.

In the match between France and Poland, Poland led France 5-1 in the first game, extended the lead to 10-6 in the second and 15-7 in the third, when the score was 24-20 in the fifth game, a dispute cost France one hit, changing the score to 24-19 and leaving Poland finish with a lead of 25-21 after this game, in the eighth game, France once tied Poland at 37 all, but failed to seize the opportunity at the critical moment, and trailed 38-40, in the deciding game, the two teams evened at 43 all again, in the last 30 seconds, Poland mounted active attacks to score two hits to squeeze into the semifinal by a narrow lead of 45-43.

In the match between the US and Germany, a dispute arose likewise when the score was 3-3 in the firs game, after discussion, the president given a penalty of one hit to each, leaving Germany a temporary lead of 4-2, Germany seized the opportunity at the critical moment and finished the game 5-2, when Germany led 9-7 in the second game, another dispute arose, and Germany finished this game 10-8, after four games, Germany led the US by 20-13, but the US equalized the score 24 all one minute and 18 second towards the end of the fifth game, Germany, however, seized an opportunity to finish this game 25-24, through intense competition, Germany eventually won over the US by a lead of 7 hits to advance to the semifinal. The scores at the end of the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth games were 30-26, 35-30, 40-36 and 45-38 respectively.

In the other two quarterfinals, Italy and Russia beat the host China and Japan to make it to the last four.
