RIO DE JANEIRO, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Brazilian fencer Fernando Linschoten was confirmed in the national team for the Pan American Games on Tuesday, following a judicial battle with Roberto Lazzarini for the position.
Lazzarini questioned the criteria used by the Brazilian Fencing Confederation (CBE) to draft athletes for the competition, which he considered "subjective" and appealed to the Brazilian Court to decide on the matter. The Court favored Linschoten in the case.
A similar argument was used by equestrians Vitor Teixeira and Luiz Azevedo to question the inclusion of riders Bernardo Alves and Rodrigo Pessoa in the Brazilian national roster for the Games.
The controversy was initiated when Pessoa, the current Olympic champion, and Alves were drafted to the team based on their positions in the world ranking, while Teixeira and Azevedo, who participated in the playoffs for the Pan Am, were left out. Unlike what happened to the fencing team, the court regarded the criterion "world ranking position" as subjective, and determined the replacement of the equestrians.
Although fencer Linschoten was not replaced, Brazil's fencing squad has been registering losses on the days that precede the Games in Rio de Janeiro.
On Monday, Athos Schwantes' sword broke accidentally and penetrated a lung of his brother and team colleague Ivan. The athlete had to undergo a surgery and remains unconfirmed for the tournament.
Last week, fencer Livia Lanzoni suffered a motorcycle accident and had her left patella broken, which will prevent her from competing for the next two months.
